Your first character
Import a character file and take it through Anchors, Fit, Rig and Finish to an editable, rigged character.
This walkthrough takes a character from a file to a rigged character in the editor. Allow a few minutes plus the time the background jobs take.
1. Import
- On the start screen, press Import, or drop an FBX, glTF, GLB or OBJ file on the drop zone. You can also use File > Import… (Cmd+I).
- The file shows in the viewport while it is analysed. The start card opens.
No file yet? Press Open sample character in Help > Setup…, or use the Sample project link on the start screen.
2. Confirm the start card
The card has four parts.
| Part | What to check |
|---|---|
| Job | Full character (default for an unrigged humanoid), Rig only (default for a file that already has a skeleton), Remesh, Garment or Prop. Change it if the app guessed wrong. |
| Detected | Editable chips: kind, Units, Fingers, Proportions (Auto, Realistic, Stylised), Clothes, Fur. Fix any wrong chip. |
| Rebuild topology | A switch for Remesh. It is off. The app may show “Remesh recommended” but never turns it on. See Remesh. |
| Target | Hero, NPC or Mobile. It sets texture size and level-of-detail budgets. See Other formats and Targets. |
Press Start. Cancel closes the card and discards it.
3. Work through the stages
For a Full character the stages are Remesh (only if switched on), Anchors, Fit, Rig and Finish. The footer has Back and Next:
- Anchors: review the points and curves the app found. Move any orange point. See Anchors.
- Fit: the base body is fitted to your model as a background job. Wait for the job tray to finish.
- Rig: press Rig to build the skeleton and skin weights. Use Test it to pose the result. See Rig and skin weights.
- Finish: bake the maps with Bake all. See Finish and maps.
Rig runs Fit by itself if the character is not fitted yet.
4. Open in editor
On the last stage, press Open in editor. In the editor, click the character to open its tabs in Modify: Shape, Look, Materials, Rig.
5. Save
Choose File > Save (Cmd+S). Use File > Save Character to Library to reuse the character in other projects.
